5 Ways to Keep Your Portfolio Updated

A web presence is must for web developers/designers and web entrepreneurs. It helps showcasing yours web applications/projects/ideas and attracting new and potential clients.  As the count of completed projects under you umbrella grows, it becomes necessary to update your portfolio periodically. Most of the times, these updates are deferred till long which results in losing many business opportunities. You might be having pretty good projects/apps that would have been far better than the current ones on your portfolio. Here are five ways that can help you in keeping your portfolio fresh and updated.

Update NOW!!!

Of course! This is the first and most important step. Go and update your portfolio right NOW. Add the projects you’ve been thinking to add lately but couldn’t do so. Remove some items. Remove some of your first designs/projects that look amateurish now. Showcase your most highly demanded skills. I prefer to use Wordpress as CMS for portfolio websites as it is very easy to add and categorize new entries. If you are a designer and you haven’t updated your portfolio for quite a white and neither plan to do so, then think of changing the background of your portfolio at least.

Write/share a new article/idea on your blog

Write a new article or share an idea that you’ve been minding for a long time. Share it with the community. Use twitter and other social media tools to spread your word and show others that you are still alive and breathing in the web. Write about your recent client communication experience. Or talk about your latest web application features.

Tweet Tweet! Display your tweets on portfolio

It’s a good practice to integrate your twitter account in your portfolio to show your recent tweets. By this way you show to other people that you interact with the community frequently. And you are humble enough to make @RTs other people. It really makes your portfolio look updated and fresh. To get a twitter widget on your website, simply go to

http://twitter.com/widgets

Grab html code and cope/paste it in your website.

But this method requires you to be a frequent or at least 1 tweet in 2 days twitter user.  This isn’t a bad thing at all.

Interact with you blog users

If you’ve unapproved comments on your blog, snatch a little time of your busy schedule and approve/respond to them. I’ve seen blogs where the author writes an article, people like the article, make their comments and ask questions but the author doesn’t responds. This really gives a bad impression on not only the users who commented on your post, but also on visitors who noticed that you haven’t replied since long. Be kind enough to respond to the user comments on your articles. Your responses to user comments show your activeness on your blog.

Get in touch with your old clients

Make a simple email newsletter, collect all your clients (with whom you’ve worked in past) email addresses, and send them a “Hi/Hello” message. This email can contain your recent accomplishments/projects as well as describing how well you are doing nowadays. This type of informal communication builds good relations between you and your clients. And keep your clients informed about your availability for potential work.

So these were just some ways to help you keeping your portfolio updated, there can be a lot of others. Share some with me. Thanks.
